A new portable/ disposable viscometer which includes disposable sample tubes is now available.  This inexpensive manual viscometer can measure Newtonian and non-Newtonian viscosities under field conditions.  A disposable viscometer which includes disposable sample tubes and a microprocessor-based measurement console for automatic needle falling time measurements, and viscosity and temperature displays is also available.  These viscometers greatly reduce testing time because sample tube cleaning is not required.  Also, available are the falling needle viscometer, the controlled needle viscometer which can easily measure liquid viscosities up to 10⁸ cP and the high pressure and high temperature viscometers which measure liquid viscosities up to 2000 psi and 350^oC, respectively.  Viscosities measured using these instruments can range from 0.1 to 10⁸ cP for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.  Additional capabilities of these instruments include the measuring of intrinsic viscosities, zero shear rate viscosities, yield stresses, relative particle settling rates and Newtonian fluid densities.  The absolute accuracy of these viscometers is better than 1% without any instrument calibration.  The portable/ disposable viscometer, suitable for field measurements, has an absolute accuracy of better than 5%.  The above viscometers which use the falling needle principle have been adopted as a standard by ASTM 5478-98.
